Project: Development of new cement type with lower carbon impact

Based on European legislation changes setting the ground for decarbonisation of Europe by 2050, in the next few years numerous investments into carbon decrease technologies will be required. In addition, the European Green Deal is pushing for better resources management according to the waste management hierarchy, such as using waste or by-product of one industry in the production of a new product in another industry. In cement production this circular economy approach is enabled also in the European norm for cement production, used to regulate cement production also in Croatia.

At the moment our cement plant in Koromacno has a technological bottleneck in the mineral components dosing system. Goal of this project is to invest into the new equipment that will enable us increase in circular economy. By the way, mineral components have multiple benefits in cement production: from one side their chemical composition creates different characteristics in cement types to match various construction requirements. From the other side, this is a circular economy process increasing use of existing resources instead of new ones. At the end, third benefit is decrease of clinker content in cement i.e. carbon footprint of cement.

For this project named "Development of new cement type with lower carbon impact" Holcim's cement plant in Koromačno was granted 3,3 million HRK from Innovation Norway, the organization managing the Programe “Business Development and Innovation Croatia” (Norwegian financial mechanism for 2014-2021).

Goals set by Holcim in this project is increase of competitiveness as well as decrease of CO2 emissions, lower electrical energy consumption and lower dust emissions in the cement plant in Koromačno. During project duration Holcim will construct a closed storage for mineral components and new transportation and dosage system followed by production of two new cement types with lower carbon impact.

Entire project has a value of 9,6 million HRK, from which 35% or around 3,3 million HRK are supported by the Norwegian financial mechanism 2014 – 2021, as part of the Business Development and Innovation Croatia Program, provided that Holcim proves the project is executed according to the rules set by Innovation Norway.

Project starts on October 1st 2020 and completion is expected by July 31st, 2023.
